The highly anticipated new release from Studio Ghibli, Arrietty, is set to have a different dub cast to the North American release. Arrietty, loosely based off the popular children’s book The Borrowers by Mary Norton, was released in Japan last year with a strong and positive audience response.
As many anime fans are aware, usually when watching anime in English, it is almost always dubbed by Americans. For Arrietty to have a US and UK dub cast, it’s certainly raised a few questions as to why. However, in the British release of the film, Saoirse Ronan (The Lovley Bones, Atonement) is confirmed to be in the dub, presumably for the role of the ‘little people’ girl, Arrietty. Other UK dub cast members include Tom Holland, Mark Strong, Olivia Colman, Phyllida Law and Geraldine McEwan.
Not only is the UK getting the film before North America, but also a unique dub cast. Perhaps once released on DVD, viewers might have the option to watch the film in three different types of dubs – English, American and Japanese.
Arrietty is due to be released in the UK nationwide on the 19th July. The North American release is scheduled for the 17th February 2012.
